Outfit Post- My Truth Behind Fashion Week

Photos by – Yunn Chin Photography

It is a daunting thing going to Fashion Week as a new blogger, I found myself asking so many questions; what do I do, what do I say, how do I start a conversation and most importantly WHAT WAS I GOING TO WEAR!!!!?

What was even more intimidating was that I didn’t know anyone going, except for my boyfriend/photographer Chin, who would be in the media pit for most of Fashion Week taking the photos for the runway shows.
I found myself questioning everything about myself; the way I talk, the way I act, my style, I was even insecure about how I laughed.  I mean, yes…… I know I have the tendency to overthink and stress about nothing but this was a probably the biggest event that I have ever gone to and studying fashion, I was not going to take it lightly.

I had always seen myself as someone who is quite confident, comfortable in my own skin and not caring much about what someone else thinks, however, this was such a true test to my character. I had felt like it was the first day of high school all over again, wanting so badly to be accepted and to fit in. By the second day, all these insecurities had taken a toll on me emotionally, I had realised that I was trying so hard to fit in that I started to loose sight of the personality that I so proudly wore and the self expressive style which made me feel comfortable in my own skin. Even Chin noticed a uncomfortable change in me, I mean, what can I say, when you are surrounded by so many gorgeous people and models with a flawless aesthetic and impeccable style the feeling of insignificance is inevitable. I am so grateful though that I had him there, he reminded me about what was important and the reason I had taken the time out to commit myself to the event. I was able to shake myself out of it and start anew, without having such expectations weighing so heavily on me.

The third day into Fashion Week, I woke up that morning and stopped caring about what other people thought of me. Instead, I did what I wanted to do, wore what I wanted to wear and laughed the way I wanted to laugh (even though sometimes I sound like a dying donkey hahaha!). I realised that I wasn’t questioning myself, because of the way people treated me or the way they judged me, if anything most people were down to earth and really easy to approach. It was me being my own enemy; I was the one who was holding myself back and I was the one who started to change myself into what I thought would be accepted when all along it was fine being myself. Once again my insecurities had almost gotten the best of me but this time I’d like to think of myself as the victor.

I guess what I’m trying to share with you is that, just like everyone else’s life, everything is not always rainbows and butterflies and I would be lying if I said I was perfect. In my previous posts I have shared with you what I had seen at Fashion Week and who I had met, I thought it was also important to be truthful and share how I had felt during the whole experience. It was such an amazing opportunity and what I personally took away from Fashion Week was that it is important to stay true to who you are, stay grounded and don’t be afraid to be you. You know what they say “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”

Anyways, enough of the serious chatter, now for some visual communication, here are the outfits I wore at Fashion Week, There is one more outfit that I will be posting from that week so keep an eye out for it 🙂

Thanks again for visiting everyone and I hope have an amazing weekend !!!

Outfit Post – Summer calls for a new change

Top – Agent ninetynine General Pants | Skirt – Paper Heart   Mink | Sandals –  Bonbons Wanted | Retro Sunglasses – Marc by Marc Jacobs

Photos taken by – Yunn Chin Photography

I know you guys are use to seeing me with my hair straight with a full fringe like in my previous outfit posts but recently I’ve been dying for a change!

I am trying to grow it out at the moment, so to resist cutting it and prolonging the process of growth by killing my hair with bleach; I thought it would be best to wear my hair naturally.

Yup, my hair is naturally curly …It’s kind of weird because it wasn’t always curly; I was born with straight hair but for some reason in my teens my mother’s genes kicked in then BAM! One day I woke up with a head full of curls.
I haven’t given up the full fringe yet; I might go back to it when I get bored wearing my hair naturally.

There is also an upside to wearing my hair curly, it literally takes me 5 minutes to fix my hair since I no longer have to straighten it 🙂
Plus I find the curls suit summer clothes for the hot weather in Sydney (However, the past couple of days it has been more humid then sunny -.-‘) Just a secret between you and me, my forehead would get crazy sweaty under that fringe in hot weather, so I think I choose a good time to give the fringe a break for now hehehe.

Speaking of Summer, I’m so ready to hit the beach, bring out the shorts, skirts, singlets and dresses. Like this awesome skirt that I bought a couple of weeks ago, totally loving it at the moment! I’ve been wearing it with plain tops like white and black basics, perfect for casual days and not to mention teaming it with the occasional pop of colour. It even got featured as a “look of the day” at my college Woot Woot! Check it out on my Instagram under the photos I’ve been tagged in – @fashiondiction

What about you, are you looking at making any changes to your style or hair due to the weather?

Sydney Fashion Weekend Part 1

Hello! Long time no post!

Sorry everyone! I know it’s been a whole week since I’ve posted compared to my usual 3 times a week update.

Last week was so crazy for me; I had assessments due, end of month deadline for work and a farewell. Not to mention Sydney Fashion Weekend and the first bridal photoshoot I’ve ever styled happened the week before.

Yeah, I was slightly overwhelmed but the good news is I have so much to update you on! Starting with SYDNEY FASHION WEEKEND!

Sydney Fashion Weekend is all about YOU! The shopaholics! They have everything a girl could want, great shopping at affordable prices, bubbly to share with the girls and a fashion show spread over four days; Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Me and Camille Sioco (www.frillyskirts.net) represented WhatIWear.com and Fashion blogger Jess Tuong came too representing her blog (www.mindbodyshop.com).

It was awesome, we got media passes for all access, totally the best!

This is the first time I’ve ever been so I had no idea what to expect. The moment we walked in, it was designer pop up shops everywhere…. It was like I had died and gone to fashion heaven!

Here’s a little taste of what Sydney Fashion Weekend was like.

Stay tuned this week to see photos of the fashion show, snaps of some stylish designers and people. I will also be giving you the inside scoop on the best day to go for discounts on designer clothes so don’t miss out!

Thanks for visiting 🙂

Happy Hump day everyone!

Sorry about the late post, there has been a slight delay with the remaining photos from the “Statements Photoshoot”. I promise part 2 will be released soon but the good news is I have a new outfit to post :).

Last Friday I attended an induction day for Raffles college, It was a day dedicated to new students who will be attending the college this year… like me 🙂 hehehe.

The last time I had studied was when I was fresh out of high school and did a fashion design course… that was almost 4 years ago. You can imagine the extreme change of lifestyle from being cooped up in an office cubicle to a full time student.

I decided that I would go to the induction day in attire that I was comfortable in, but still reflected the essence of fashion college life.

Keeping it basic, I wore a buttoned up collared shirt underneath a black tight fitting dress. On the day, I actually wore my rose-laced black bowtie but misplaced it for this photo shoot :(.  So instead I decided to feature my flower head piece, which I’ve been dying to wear.

For my signature pop of colour, I chose to team the basic black and white with a green blazer and pink flats.

Just a quick tip – layering a black dress with an open blazer, cardigan and jacket flatters your shape by making your figure look skinnier. That day, I wasn’t feeling the most attractive (shape wise). Wearing the blazer on top gave me that little boost of confidence.

Yesterday was my first day at Raffles college, so watch this space to see what I wore on my first day back as student.

Stay tuned for more photos from the Statements photoshoot, hopefully I’ll be able to post them up soon :).

See you guys on Saturday!!!

60’s Inspired Photo shoot – Final Edit

Styling, Creative Director and Hair – Ethel Manalo (me)
Photographer – Yunn Chin
Hair and Make Up Artist – Sheila Tsakalidis
Model #1 – Bettina Banks
Model #2 – Kelsey Hudson
BTS Photographer and Assistant – Tiffany Han
VW Buggy – Bhathiya Welaratne

The last two weeks I had planned and organised a sixties inspired photo shoot for my Raffles application. When I read the requirements of what needed to be in the portfolio, right from the start, I was excited about the idea of styling and directing my own shoot. I had styled and directed shoots before, but they were never based on my own concept or ideas.

Initially I had no idea what to shoot, obviously it would be about fashion, but I had to narrow it down to shoes, jewellery or clothes. If it was clothes, what type of clothes? What style would it be? What colours would I use? What theme should I go with? ARGH! It was enough to make my mind explode. After some good advice from my lovely roommate, I decided to base my shoot on a sixties concept. Why the sixties you ask? Well, if I was to describe my style (street, hipster, grunge, preppy or urban) I honestly wouldn’t be able to pick one. That’s because all these styles influence my own. However, there is one era that strongly influences my choices when I go shopping. You guessed it! The sixties!!!

I love the playfulness that’s expressed through the alluring sex appeal in the women during the sixties. I also love how the pin up women of the sixties styled their hair artistically with such elegance and femininity.

For the shoot I wanted to express the ambience of the ‘girl next door’, whether it be naughty or nice. I wanted to style the clothes/accessories to be filled with plenty of bright colours, girly prints and cute oversized bows. I wanted to bring out the youthful, fun and energetic feel from the sixties.

The vision was already embedded in my mind, all I needed to do was to bring the idea to life by styling the models and directing the shoot. I researched sixties themes (make-up, hairstyles, photographs, advertisements etc.) for inspiration and direction. Once I knew exactly what I wanted, I then went on the search for models, photographers and make-up artists.

Once I had sent out the invitations for the shoot, I was fortunate enough to have gathered such an amazing and talented group of people.

As promised, here are the finished photos… Enjoy!

60’s Inspired Photo – Shoot Behind the Scenes

As much as I had planned and organised the shoot like a Nazi for two weeks, the main challenge I had to face was trying to get all the photographers, the make-up artist and models to come to an agreement for a place and time. It was definitely a struggle, since we all come from different areas in Sydney and have different schedules and commitments.

Both models could only stay till 2:00pm as they had other plans, the location that we were shooting at only allowed us to stay till 12:00pm and the car that we were using for the shoot was only available in the morning.

Luckily we were able to overcome the lapses and restrictions by working as a team and managing our time appropriately. To ensure everything would go according to plan, I wrote up a timetable with estimations on how long everything would take – the make-up, the hair, traveling time, time we had to arrive at the location and duration of the shoot. So we weren’t too tight on time and to give more leeway to shooting we had to start earlier, which meant starting the hair and make-up at 6:00am to start shooting from 10:00am-12:00pm. During the day this timetable was very effective since there was always someone monitoring the time and reminding us how long we had left. Everyone who couldn’t get to the location we organised someone to pick them up and take back home.

In retrospect, distance and time were our biggest enemies since we had to organise how to get everyone in one place and shoot in such a limited time frame.

In the end the shoot was a success!!!

Here are the rest of the behind the scene photos.

Stay tuned this Friday for the finished photos and the concept behind the whole shoot 🙂

Animal Print

Dress – Jorge | Flats – Court Couture  |  Denim Jacket – Cotton On

Saturday is usually the night that everyone is out and about. For me, it was a night out to dinner with friends and I couldn’t think of a better night to show off my new animal print dress from Jorge. Now trust me when I say that the one thing my wardrobe is lacking is animal print. Besides this dress, I only have one leopard print top in my entire wardrobe. I’m not usually a fan of animal print clothing unless I see something that I NEED to have and this dress was it! Not only did I score it on sale, but I also couldn’t resist the colour-saturated print. This isn’t your typical animal print dress with black spots or zebra stripes. From afar it can easily be mistaken for a trendy galaxy dress, but if you have a closer look, you can see the head of a fierce tiger ready to bite. Wearing something like this somehow makes me feel empowered and strong. It’s funny how clothes can bring out hidden confidence you thought you never had.

I was only recently introduced to the label Jorge through ‘Catch of the Day’. For those who aren’t familiar, it’s a website that lists deals and discounts currently running. I’m surprised I didn’t find the label sooner, now I’m in love with their clothes. Jorge is an Australian label that has a diverse range of clothes with a style that mixes sexy and cute. Their collections showcase loud colours, bold prints and statement pieces. For those who love wearing pieces with bright colours or fun prints to liven up your style, this will definitely be a label you’ll come love.

Are you fan of animal print?

You can check out the label Jorge at – http://www.jorgeclothing.com/

“Don’t buy expensive clothes, make your clothes look expensive with how you wear it”

Matching Blazer and Shorts – ASOS Collared Shirt – Chicabooti Bowler Hat – Tempt Brogues – ASOS Bag – CPS Bow Tie – Equip

It’s the start of a new tedious week and the count down to the weekend has already begun. Since starting this blog, the most common questions I’ve been asked is “what is it for?” and “why are you doing it?” In a quick panic I start mumbling, stuttering and I find myself making up some odd reasons to justify why I strangely take photos of myself wearing my everyday outfits. I then realise that the year and a half I spent doubting myself, going around and around in circles, thinking if I should or shouldn’t. Somewhere along the way I had forgotten why I wanted to do this in the first place. Then I start thinking that I should categorise my blog into the common blogging stereotypes of “DIY”, “picture based”, “editorial” etc. etc. I thought to myself “At least then it would make more sense to other people”. But I guess to answer your questions; in all honesty I initially wanted to start blogging to share my own personal style. Let it be expressed in photos, words, drawing or creations, either way I just wanted to share my love for fashion. In this blog, don’t expect to see insanely expensive brand names (unless I scored it on sale) because lets face it, IM BROKE!” What you can expect is outfits based on the quote that I live by “don’t buy expensive clothes, make your clothes look expensive with how you wear it” taught to me by my very own mother. This is just the third post on a very freshly started blog, in other words there’s still room to grow.

Now about my outfit – Out of the many things I love to wear, depending on my mood of course, nothing else compares to a good old fashion bow tie. Not too sure when the obsession began, all I know is that I just can’t get enough, especially with this gold metal bow tie (which is actually meant to be a hair clip). I wore this on the weekend, I wanted to wear something quirky, bright, classic and cute; this was the end result. It was a chilly but not too cold day, so I thought it was a good time to bring out the matching blazer and shorts. I teamed up my white and black polka-dot bag to accentuate the love heart polka dot shirt. To tie the out fit together I accessorised adding a Bowler hat and classic 1920s inspired brogues.

Stay tuned for this weeks outfits.
